Treating Hair Loss
The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. There are many different forms and causes of hair loss. We must understand that there can be no single ‘magic’ hair loss solution that will treat all these many types of alopecia.
Worldwide billions of pounds are spent yearly on different hair loss cures. However, without proper diagnosis most of these products are ineffective. Correct diagnosis and a thorough investigation into all possible causative factors are paramount prior to administrating a hair loss treatment. Whilst a diagnosis is being reached, underlying health problems and other factors that may be contributing to the hair loss, must be investigated and treated along with the main treatment. These may be discovered by taking blood samples or through asking the patients questions about their medical history during the initial consultation. Our holistic approach will ensure that people who seek help from us will get only the best all-around advice and treatment for the management of their hair loss problem and ongoing hair care.
Here at HDC, we only administer hair loss treatments that have undergone double blinded clinical trials and/or are supported by valid scientific rationale.
Seeing as androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss people suffer from, we will discuss hair loss treatment that is normally administered in this case.
Finasteride: Finasteride is the most effective hair loss treatment up to date for androgenetic alopecia in men. It is taken orally and each tablet contains 1mg of the active ingredient Finasteride. Finasteride inhibits the formation of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Lowering dihydrotestosterone helps prevent further shrinking of the affected follicles and may even reverse the hair loss process to a certain extent. Around 60% of men see some kind of improvement, 30% have no further hair loss and in around 10% of men the hair loss continues. Improvement usually takes place around 3-6 months of taking finasteride. Men that have results must continue their treatment in order to sustain their results.
Topical Scalp Drops: Hair loss can also be treated by the use of topical scalp drops containing various potent ingredients. One well known ingredient is Minoxidil. Minoxidil can thicken up thinning and vellus hairs in around 50% of its users. Even though Minoxidil may stimulate the hair bulb it does not inhibit the action of DHT so the hair loss will actually continue. For this reason, Medroxyprogesterone Acetate and Oestradiol Valerate are also included in our formulation. They are anti-androgens and their action is to prevent Testosterone and the enzyme 5-Alpha reductase from co-joining.
This means that less damaging DHT is produced. Long term use helps prevent or delay further hair loss in men. Our formulation also contains Tretinoin which is a derivative of vitamin A. Its action is to enhance the penetration and absorption of all the active ingredients in our hair loss formulation. Also included is the ingredient Methyl Nicotinate which is a vasodilator. This means that it increases capillary blood flow to the skin which also helps absorption. All in all our hair loss scalp drops block the action of factors that cause hair loss, increase penetration and enhance the properties of minoxidil.
Minoxidil and Finasteride Gel:
At HDC we continuously update our offered Hair Loss Treatments to the latest available cures. A new product is now available in gel format for topical use. It comes in two options. Topical Minoxidil Gel that can be used also for patients that want an alternative from minoxidil Drops.
Topical mixture of Minoxidil and Finasteride Gel that can be used from patients who are reluctant to use oral finasteride pills and for those that want to use two in one package.
Micronutrients:
A healthy dietary intake is an essential ingredient of healthy hair. Our Micronutrient blend contains all necessary Vitamins, Minerals and Amino acids, necessary for healthy hair. For those patients that could have unstable dietary habits or have insufficient intake of these elements from their diet, micronutrients can be combined with the above treatments for having a complete Hair loss Treatment solution.
Assessment of Hair Loss Treatment at HDC
Prior to starting a hair loss treatment an assessment of the current condition may be offered to the patient. This will give us the opportunity to reassess the condition at a later date, usually every 6 months or every year and make any adjustments to the treatment if necessary to suit the patient’s needs.
